What is it good for?

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth.

Religion started almost as soon as humans appeared on this earth. Neanderthal man, over 100,000 years ago, and later Cro-Magnons man, 40,000 years ago, are early Homo sapiens and is believed to have had some form of religion, superstition or supernatural belief. Religion was a way to explain things that could not be explained.

"The truth of the matter is this: No god is a philosopher. or seeker after wisdom, for he is wise already; nor does any man who is wise seek after wisdom. Neither do the ignorant seek after Wisdom. For herein is the evil of ignorance, that he who is neither good nor wise is nevertheless satisfied with himself: he has no desire for that of which he feels no want."

Plato's Symposium

Many years ago I had the good fortune to take part in a new type of high school course. Taught by a young man name Clark, who was the byproduct of the 60’s, called his class E.S.P.. He covered a wide range of topics. The main emphasis was on the human spirit, faith and history. The Masks of God by Joseph J. Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was required reading along with the teaching of Buddha, Hinduism and Christ. Learning to Meditate, reaching Nirvana and Astral Projection were subjects that captivated me.
